Introduction: Some people are scary. Can you describe someone you know/knew who was scary?
Have you ever had a thought…that to yourself you said, “That’s scary.”? Do you suppose anyone has ever thought of you as scary? (Are you brave enough to mention it?)
Why do you think so much speculation has arisen around Mary Magdalene? (Mary of Magdala/Mary the towering one)
A. Mary - before the Cross
a. Read Luke 8:1-3
b. What do you learn about Mary M. from this text?
c. Have you ever thought someone was possessed by an evil spirit? Describe the things that led you to think so.
d. What does your “dark side” look like? What scares you about yourself? What are you doing about it?
B. Mary – At the Cross
a. Read John 19:25-27
b. What do we learn about Mary M. from this text? Any guys around? Who?/Why not other guys?
c. Contrast the differences between the women, esp. Mary M. and Mary, mother of Jesus. Who had the most sin to be dealt with on the cross?
d. Put into your own words what it means that Jesus paid for your sin. What are the emotions that arise within you as you think about it?
C. Mary of Bethany, anointed the feet of Jesus.
a. Read John 20:1
b. Why do you think that John focuses on Mary M. when parallel passages suggest other women were with her? (Cf. Matthew 28:1; Mk. 16:1; Lk. 24:1)
c. Read John 20:10-18
d. What does this passage tell us about the human witness to the resurrection of Jesus?
e. How would you describe your personal encounter with the risen Christ?
Conclusion: In what ways are you truly like Mary Magdalene?
